Meditation Scroll Adventure Continues

I have a collection of small and large blocks, embroidered pieces, and various unfinished experiments - some were created during pattern testing, while others were trials of new ideas that never developed into complete patterns or finished projects.

I keep all those UFOs in a box, and occasionally I sift through the unfinished pieces to see if I can find any purposeful use for them. I realised that some of them might never be used, yet I could never bring myself to part with them.

Last year I came across a post on Instagram - a video featuring a glimpse of a beautifully stitched large scroll by a talented maker - Michèle. I was really curious to know what those scrolls were as I never saw them before. Michele, seeing my interest, kindly sent me a few large wooden spools hoping I would find a good use for them.

Inspired, I started exploring fabric scrolls and how others made and used them. That's when I discovered small Slow Stitching Meditation Scrolls, and without hesitation, I stitched my very first one.

After finishing this delightful little Meditation Scroll, my attention shifted to the large scrolls. I felt they would be the perfect way to showcase all the unfinished bits and bobs while also serving as a source of inspiration for me.

First, I cut, actually ripped, which is the best way to get a nicely frayed edge, a pice of backing cotton. Then, I went through my box of UFOs. It was a nostalgic trip down the memory lane. Seeing these forgotten pieces brought back memories of the fabrics I loved, the techniques I had explored, and the ideas I once tried to bring to life. It felt like reconnecting with old friends.

I began piecing the blocks together, one after another, trying to create a story. When it came time to add tiny stitches, I carefully chose floss colours that I could spot in the blocks, bringing everything together with delicate texture and details.

This project isn't finished yet - it will take some time - but I am savouring every moment playing with these delightful pieces. I am thrilled to have discovered the perfect way to store all the cherished parts of my work that I could never part with, so I can admire them whenever I feel like it.

I cannot wait to share with you the finished scroll!

Happy inspirations! Larisa xox
