Interesting Discovery

I was going to make a set of four linen coasters with a diagonal flowery cotton stripe in the top left corner. I cut all the fabrics, stitched it all up.

I had an extra minute of free time, so I played around with the pieces I made. I just liked looking at them (it's my first make since the arrival of the baby) and somehow I arranged all the four pieces into this lovely shape. Oh, that looks interesting!

I got very excited because it looked like a great idea for a quilting block. I am sure that a block like that already exists and probably even has a name but to me it was a completely unexpected discovery. A totally new shape that I did not make before. A discovery on how to and how easy it was to make. Of course I forgot all about the set of four coasters and turned it into one placemat instead.

I used medium weight linen in lovely stone shade for the base and cotton with an intricate flowery design for the stripes.

A plain cotton ribbon for a tag to match the mat. For the back of the mat I used the same flowery cotton.

I know, it's not something fancy and complicated to make but to me, not a quilter, any new skill or pattern learnt is a great joy. Even though it's a simple design, it opens up a door for new, more challenging and interesting creations.

Isn't it just lovely when you create something totally unexpected and something that you never made before without any instructions or tutorials but by pure accident/chance. Happy crafting! Larisa xox

    1. Thank you, Gina! You were right about getting addicted to quilting. I am back to paper piecing at the moment, just a few seams at a time while baby is asleep. :-)
