Little Sewing Kit

It's not a secret that I love all sorts of cute little sewing kits, folders, pouches and other special sewing notions. It seems to me that I can always find some time for making a new little pretty thing to keep me company on my sewing adventures. The other day I went to Spotlight to get the most ordinary and boring black buttons for some mending work, but as you can imagine, I simply could not leave the store without some pretties that inspired me to sew this little sweet folder. In pink.

Oh! I cannot stay away from pinks and blues. These are my two the most favourite colours and no matter how hard I try, I always gravitate towards them. This Japanese Lawn is the most delicate fabric. It was because of these strawberries, blue flowers and tiny animals that I decided to make a little patchwork block just for fun that ended up being on the front of this sewing kit. The blue and pink fabrics are linen and cotton blend. I also found the tiniest and the sharpest embroidery scissors that I like to use when doing some hand sewing. They are so cute!

OK. Here is the inside of my little sewing kit. Nothing fancy, not too much, just one double pocket for scissors and my cheat measuring tape that I made using a cotton ribbon and some fabric. I also keep a handmade fabric bobbin in that little pocket. A pin patch that I made pretty much the same way as I would make a little fabric label, but added a piece of felt on top that is attached only with four stitches in the corners. That round bit is a pincushion that cannot be removed. The buttons are there just to make me smile.

I have learnt that I always need some kind of a pincushion or a needle minder when I am hand sewing. Depending on the work I am doing and the place where I am doing it (not everything is done at my sewing desk), I give a preference to needle minders or pincushions. If I am working with a few pins, I prefer to have a pincushion handy instead of a needle minder. When I am doing embroidery, I like to keep a coupe of needle minders around.

I have no idea if this block has a name (the only thing that comes to mind is a Granny Square block), but they are simply nine squares joined together in rows of three. These squares are only 3/4" by 3/4". Tiny, but rather cute.

Have you ever made fabric bobbins? They are so easy and fun to make and you can have a whole collection of them in different sizes and pretty fabrics to store your precious ribbons and trims. If you would like to make a few bobbins yourself, an easy tutorial is here.

Little sewing kits are really great for sewing on the go or around the house. They can even be used as small working mats in your lap while you sew and watch tv. I also like the fact that you can add any sweet details to make your sewing kit your own and keep you company when you need it.

Just in case if you are interested, the fabrics I used for the sewing kit are: Japanese Lawn Flora & Fauna in pink, Cotton/Linen Chambray in pale pink, Kona cotton in pink, Lecien 30's Collection Bambi and Floral, Atsuko Matsuyama Fancy Scallop in pink and wool felt. For the top running stitches I used Aurifil embroidery floss #2230. Most of my shopping is done at Spotlight, Ministry of Fabric or various Etsy stores. Happy sewing adventures! Larisa xox

    1. Oh, I know what you mean, Teresa. I have a two and half year old and most of the time I have to put everything away and play with cars and trains or read books instead of sewing. :-) Enjoy this time, Little Ones grow too fast. :-)

  4. It's just gorgeous Larisa! I was just thinking the other day that I need to make a hand sewing kit or something as I have started doing more hand stitching and it would be handy to have a little case for the bibs and bobs! Megan x

    1. Thank you very much, Megan! I find little sewing kits and folders very useful. I have a few now and use them for various projects, depending on what pins, needles, threads I need for that particular project. They are also great as tiny working lap mats. :-)

  7. At Anwar Industries, our most popular method to make fabric labels is flexographic printing.
