Meditation Scroll - Let's Make One Together!

Where and how to start? Start by asking yourself: Why do I want to make a meditation scroll?

Here are a few reasons to inspire you:

  • You just love how sweet these scrolls look and want to make one for yourself.

  • You want to learn this technique.
  • You are simply curious to see how it's done.
  • You are having a hard time focusing on any other large projects at the moment and need something to keep you busy and boost your creativity.
  • You want to create a scroll that holds the memory of an important time in your life.
  • You want to make a special gift for a quilty friend.
  • You have treasured wooden spools from your Grandma or Mum and wish to give them a new purpose.

Once you know the reason why you want to make a meditation scroll, it would make it much more easier for you to pick a theme and fabric scraps for your scroll.

A QUICK NOTE: This sew-along is designed to be relaxed and intuitive - there are no strict rules or clear instructions to follow. I will provide guidance and prompts for every step, but the true magic will come from your own creativity. Trust your heart to lead the way!

Once you have discovered your "why" for making a meditation scroll, it's time to gather your materials. The beauty of this project lies in its simplicity - here is all you will need:

  • A wooden or plastic spool
  • A strip of cotton or linen for the base
  • Fabric scraps
  • A pair or two of sharp fabric scissors
  • Embroidery floss, sewing threads, perle cotton
  • A glue pen (a paper glue stick works just as well)
  • Sharp sewing needles and pins
  • One small button (optional)
  • Stamps and fabric ink (optional)

Now, let's go through the list of materials in detail.

But before we do that, a friendly reminder: please do not rush to buy anything new! Take a moment to look around your sewing space - chances are, you already have everything you need. This project is all about creativity and mindfulness, not about perfection or new supplies. Open your stash, repurpose what you have, and let’s begin!

A wooden or plastic spool - Can be any size. Just remember: large scrolls, need large fabric scraps and more time to complete, while small scrolls need small scraps and much less time. The spool can be wooden or plastic, but I will tell you a secret  - you don't even need one! You can simply roll your fabric by hand, though a spools will give your scroll that perfect, neat look.

I would suggest starting with a small spool. It's a perfect way to dive into this project/technique without being overwhelmed. You will quickly see if it makes you happy and if you want to spend more time on it.

The base fabric - Choose a strip of cotton, linen, or even a ribbon in a required width. An old vintage tablecloth or pillowcase would be perfect for this project. Please do not rip or cut your fabric now, I will provide some helpful tips how to measure and prepare the base fabric later.

Fabrics: linen, linen salvage, vintage tablecloth with a loose weave and cotton with a tight weave.

A QUICK NOTE: While cotton and linen’s loose weave makes them ideal for tearing into strips, not all fabrics cooperate easily! Tightly woven fabrics or blends may resist tearing - for these, sharp scissors will give you cleaner edges. Always test a small corner first to see how your fabric behaves.

I tried ripping this tightly woven cotton, but it did not work. I had to use scissors instead.

TIP: For a harmonious base, consider using white or natural-toned base fabric. This creates a clean canvas that lets your scrappy elements shine.

Regardless of the size of your spool, I would recommend using a strip of fabric that is no longer than about 23-27 inches.

Fabric scraps - The heart of your scroll! Before cutting anything, simply explore your scrap stash and let the fabrics speak to you. You already have everything you need!

When selecting fabric scraps for your meditation scroll, let your "why" guide you. Choose whimsical prints and text fabrics if you want to tell a story, or simply pull whatever scraps feel joyful for an easygoing creation. You might settle on a rainbow of colours or stick to a single soothing palette. There are no rules, only what resonates with you. This scroll is yours alone, so every scrap should spark happiness when you unroll it.

TIP: Choose scraps that will make you smile every time you unroll your finished meditation scroll. This is about your happiness, so choose what delights your heart.

A pair or two of sharp fabric scissors - A good pair (or two) of sharp fabric scissors will be your best friends for this project. You will need them for precisely trimming fabric edges, cutting threads cleanly and shaping small details.

Embroidery floss and threads - This is your perfect chance to use up those precious snippets of leftover floss. Keep it simply with a single colour or mix threads as you like for a vibrant and interesting texture. There are no rules, only what makes your heart sing.

A glue pen - While not essential, a glue pen is incredibly helpful for keeping your pieces in place as you work. Without one, you will need to rely on pins or basting stitches, but I prefer using just a tiny dot of glue to secure fabrics before stitching. If you don't have a glue pen, then use a regular paper glue stick. Just remember: less is more - use the smallest amount possible.

Sharp sewing needles and pins - These are essential. Since we are going to work with small pieces, you will want sharp sewing needles and pins that glide smoothly through all layers. Dull tools can tug or distort delicate fabrics.

One small button - Optional. I will show you how to add a charming mini button with an easy loop closure, but this is completely up to you. If you prefer, a ribbon tie works just as beautifully to secure your scroll.

TIP: When selecting a button for your scroll, think about the visual balance. Choose a button that is proportional to the scroll's size. A tiny button might get lost on a large scroll, while an oversized one could overwhelm the delicate size of the scroll.

Stamps and fabric ink - Optional. Fabric stamps let you imprint cute designs or meaningful words onto your scroll. If you don't have stamps, simply use text-printed fabric from your stash or embroider words instead.

Hope this guide helps you get all the supplies you will need before we start out easygoing sew along. I will be posting here, on my YouTube channel and Instagram as well. Stay tuned!
