Simple and Nice

Oh, I am so excited! I was asked to make something! Something for my Not So Little Boy. A new phone case. You might be wondering why such a small and simple thing makes me so excited? Well, there are a few reasons for that. First - I love making things for my family and friends, second - it's not easy to find a project to sew for a pre-teen boy, and third - he hardly asks for anything really (apart from an elastic strap for his lunch box last week).

He asked for the colour green but I didn't have the right shade and pattern of green fabric in my stash. After thinking a bit, he went for the same print as for his tablet. I had a small piece left of this funky Japanese linen, so it was a perfect choice.

I was going to insert a flex lock but I couldn't find one of the right size and I didn't want to use any snaps so we agreed on an open top. The case is deep and snug enough for the phone not to slip out of it. I lined the inside with the contrasting orange cotton and added two layers of interfacing for extra padding.

Instead of machine stitching the top edge of the case, I added hand running stitching in bright orange cotton thread. No labels this time or tags, just a D-ring tab so a clasp can be attached if needed.

So simple and nice. My Boy was very happy with his new case and I even got an extra dose of kisses and hugs. So sweet! These kisses and hugs are even more precious now since he is not really little anymore. Happy sewing! Larisa xox

  1. It is so special when you are asked by a family member to make something, but even more so when it's your son who is asking. I think the orange lining is inspired.

    1. It really is special, Dina, to be asked by a boy to make something, especially with fabric. I like orange colour but in small doses, like a bright ray of sunshine.

    1. I was so inspired and excited that I made the case in a matter of two hours while he was away. Nothing beats that happy smile on your child's face and bear hug as a thank you. Have a lovely week, Gina!

  4. This is so nice and it's good to see things for boys, sometimes they seem to be left out of the crafty stuff. I think I may make one for my now quite grown up nephew, but wi the right fabric it would be a great present. I so love your work Larissa.
