Cute Baby Onesies

Making something new, cute and very little. Raw edge applique on newborn's onesies. It's so much fun to create your own unique designs for things like that.

This was my first attempt to applique on a t-shirt making sure that I don't stretch the fabric too much. The boat and the toadstool were almost like test runs for this project, just a quick "try an idea out" late at night without much thinking and planning. I used a zig-zag machine stitch for it. It turned out alright but I saw some room for improvement here.

Then, after some thinking, with the first morning light, this little blue elephant with an yellow ear came to life. He also has an ink stamped tail and eye. I used the normal machine stitch set to the smallest size to attach the applique to the top but added a single count embroidery floss to trace around the elephant in a running stitch.

The strawberry was made by a suggestion of my not so Little Son. I used the newly bought fabric for it and I absolutely love it. Tiny white flowers on red make such a lovely combination.

Then I remembered about this little teddy bear that I made for a different project and thought of using it as well. It's an applique with a hand embroidery.

Who knew that something as simple as this could transform a plain onesie into something more attractive and cute. Such a quick and easy way of making a unique gift for a new baby. Larisa xox

  1. Darling little onesies and shirt!!! The strawberry is my favorite! You make the cutest baby things!!! When I have appliqued on knit I have used stitch and tear which is a stabilizer used during stitching and then you can tear it off when you are done. Yours look perfect so what ever you did is working perfectly!

    1. I love the strawberry very much too and I think the fabric is just perfect for it. Thank you for your tip, Gina, I have to give this stabilizer a go if I find some. I simply used a fusible web for this applique and then stitched around.

    1. Thank you, Carole! To be honest, the boat and the toadstool look quite messy because of the size of zig-zag stitch I used. But still they are quite nice and even survived a cycle of washing. :-)

  3. They are all so sweet. I must admit that I haven't been brave enough to tackle stretch fabric.

    1. Thank you, Dina! It's my first ever attempt and I am quite happy with the result. I think the tick here is the quality of the knit. For a better result it should be quite fine and less stretchy. The boat and toadstool were done on a softer, more stretchier knit and the edges were not as smooth as on the other tops. But a bit of ironing fixed it in a way.

  4. I hope you are selling these! They are very sweet, and if I had anyone small enough to wear them any more I would be a customer:-)

    1. Thank you very much, Catherine! I have a problem with producing multiple items,I get bored too quickly but still I am entertaining the idea of opening a shop one day. One day but not now. :-)

  5. Teddy bears have become a common display in children's playrooms, toy shelves and even teenage girls' rooms. One wouldn't be surprised if a girl 13 years old still had a teddy bear beside her when she sleeps. If Mr. Bean can have his own teddy, why can't she? adorable teddy bear names
