The Splendid Sampler: Block No. 1 and No. 2

I am very excited! I have joined the largest project ever (for me personally) with thousands of people sewing along around the world. The Splendid Sampler. Have you heard about it? A whole year of making 100 quilting blocks designed especially for this project.

Maybe you have noticed that not long ago I joined Instagram. I kept putting it off for a long time and believed that it simply was not for me. But then something changed. At the beginning of the year I joined IG and I am glad I did. I have already met so many talented and inspiring and supportive and simply sweet people. It's a wonderful community of amazing crafters that you can learn a lot from. And also I was introduced to quite a few new local online fabric stores which is really helpful.

It was on IG that I heard about The Splendid Sampler project. I liked the idea instantly, but thought I would not be able to find the time or patience (I am still not sure if I would) for all 100 blocks. The idea of it still seems quite overwhelming.
I was sure about my decision not to join the project, but once I saw a few lovely blocks made by other people, I decided to give it a go. I downloaded the pattern and picked the fabrics, and put it all together. It was easy and fun. So that was the moment when I decided to join the crowd. This is my block No. 1 Heart Aflutter designed by Pat Sloan.

The blocks are being published twice a week. Last Thursday the second block called Wings, designed by Jane Davidson was published and it left me quite frustrated. It took me some time to work out what prints to use, how to put it all together (because remember, I am not a quilter). I had to remind myself to read the instructions and not to rush. Once I finished the first row of 12 one inch squares, I felt much better and more confident. So here it is, my block No. 2 called Wings. Looking at it now, I actually like it, all the tiny pieces come together nicely (no, I don't mean the quality of my work).

If you are interested in joining this project, you still can. I am just curious to see if I can go all the way to the very end. I will be publishing updates and my progress here on the blog, but if you feel like some sneak peeks, you can always find me on Instagram here. You can also have a look at all the blocks that have been made so far by other people here. Have a wonderful day! Larisa xox

  1. They look pretty good to me, Larisa. I don't dare even look at Instagram as I already spend way too much time online.

    1. Thank you, Dina! It's a very interesting and educational project. I know what you mean, I have no facebook or tweeter account, and I try my best not to spend much time on Instagram which can be quite addictive and time-consuming. :-)

    1. Hi Carole, so nice to see you back here! Thank you very much! It's a wonderful project for me personally, because I don't feel quite comfortable with mixing colours, so I have to push myself in some new ways.
