Baby Makes

A couple of small things have been ticked off my To Do list. The first one is a knitted baby hat. It was kind of a quick and a necessary project. It's winter here in Australia, and days are quite cool and windy. I was trying to find a baby hat to keep my little boy warm but the only hats I could find were the big ones or very thin ones, or ones that were really unattractive. Maybe I was looking in all the wrong places but anyway...

... off I went to a craft store instead and got a couple of balls of this lovely cotton in Cloud colour (I love the name). It took one evening between cooking and feeding, bathing and rocking to finish off the hat. Just simple stripes and a cute pom-pom. So now our Little One is warm.

The other project is a baby fabric book. Such a fun little make. Quick, easy and fulfilling. For the cover I used Daddy's old shirt (I could not part with the cotton of such a great quality) and a couple of buttons that came from an old baby outfit.

The best thing about this book is that it has crinkly pages. Thanks to Dina's tip, I used a plastic* bag from cereal between the pages. The pages make fun noise that our Little One loves.  I used small pieces of different fabrics with fun prints. The only thing is that I don't have a choice of boy's fabrics in my stash, so I had to stick mostly with pinks and flowery prints.

When I first thought of making a baby book, I had a different idea in mind that required a bit more time. I was going to make some applique and embroidery on each page. But then I saw my Little One curiously inspecting my sewing machine cover. He kept scratching the pictures on it with his tiny fingers one after another while I was holding him in my arms. He looked so cute and busy that I decided to make a small fabric book for him immediately. We can sing a Humpty Dumpty song or Baa Baa Black Sheep.

We can check out all the colours, count the pretty flowers, chickens and cute deers or simply make noise by flipping the pages.

It does not matter what we do, as long as we are having a good time together, learning new things and exploring the world around us and I get a chance to do a bit of sewing as well. Talking about sewing, I am off to try and finish my Artist Trading Card that is almost ready for VeryBerryHandmade swap. I can't wait to share it with you and send it off to my secret partner. Hope you are having a wonderful week and good night sleep! :-) Larisa xox

* Note to self: Oh, one tiny but important detail, if I ever make a book or anything else with plastic inside, I should make sure not to iron it at all or iron it on the lowest temperature setting. I almost ruined the finished book with my love for ironing. :-)

  1. These are so cute! I was hoping to make a baby book as well, and use plastic for cracking sounds too (I used this idea on my fabric elephant though), but never actually had the time to make it. In the end my little one was given several fabric books, so there was no need for it... The knitted hat is just lovely, (blue and white, surely is a boy's hat :) ) I wished I could knit, but now I am just focusing on my sewing (still have so much to learn! on a near future I will think about learning to knit...). LOL, and lesson learned, do not iron plastic.... I never ironed my elephant but it was just because I am really lazy and never iron my sewing projects.... yes, so lazy.... :) x

    1. Thank you, Ann! Knitting used to be my number one crafting and at the same time I used to hate sewing because it seemed so tedious to me, but then something changed... I still enjoy occasional small knitting, but nothing major really. Knitting is quite easy once you get to know the basics. I am sure you will enjoy it when you have time. I think I iron my sewing projects too much, sometimes to the point that they lose its original look. I wish I could keep my hands away from that iron. :-)

  3. Ha ha ha! Your note to yourself about ironing really made me laugh! It simply hadn't occurred to me as I do so little ironing!

    1. I do too much ironing, but I am learning (very slowly though) to keep away from my iron. :-)
