Sketching Away

I've been busy. Not with the usual fabrics and needles but rather with pencils and paper. I kept thinking of getting back to drawing but you know how it usually happens, one thing comes up first, then something else follows and they are all important things that require your time and attention, and at the end of the day there is no time or energy left just for you, for things that you wanted to do but didn't think were important. This time it was a chain of tiny events that finally got me back to my drawing notebook.

I enjoy reading Marigold Jam blog, it's always filled with lovely stories and photos. So one of the latest posts was "One thing leads to another" where Jane writes about practicing drawing following a suggestion by another blogger, Carol, who wrote "A drawing a day" post.

So... After reading these two posts and looking at the sketches by Jane and Carol, I had no time to waste anymore. Off I went and found my little drawing notebook, that used to be in my handbag for some time but then mysteriously migrated somewhere else. I got out a pack of pencils and drifted far away to the land of dreams, peace and tranquility. It was such a great therapeutic session, if I may call it that. It was amazing! And the best thing is that somehow, after I made the first sketch, it seemed much easier finding a few minutes throughout the next few days for the activity I enjoy.

I absolutely agree with Carol that drawing really does make you look at objects. You don't even realise but you start noticing small, tiny details that make a huge difference. And these small things make me slow down and enjoy the moment to the fullest. Kind of like mindfulness, right?

I don't call myself an artist and never will, not at all, drawing is just something I enjoy doing and wish I had time to take a proper course. Maybe later. I wish I had enough courage when I was little to believe in myself and go with my desire to draw. But it's in the past. At the moment I focus on now and no matter how hard it is, I try finding just a few minutes for things that I truly enjoy.

Wishing you all even a few minutes of free time just for yourself, for things that inspire and motivate you, for things that bring you joy. Larisa xox

  1. So glad to have inspired you but sadly I haven't kept it up myself I fear! Your drawings are beautiful so do keep going and showing us what you draw. It's true that you have to look at things properly f you are going to draw/sketch them I found and that in itself was a useful lesson. Thanks for the link.

    1. Thank you so much for inspiring me! It's really hard to keep drawing everyday, but I would love to keep this practise going even if it's only a coupe of times a week.

  3. These are lovely drawings - you don't have to think of yourself as an artist to be one! You are right about the mindfulness that comes with drawing - one can get so absorbed, and it's lovely to really see something.

    1. Thank you, Catherine! It really is nice to do something like this just for myself, without any particular purpose apart from the enjoyment. Wish days were longer though. :-)

  4. Thank you for your lovely post, days just fly by with trivia but somehow it's important and has to be done. I try to do something 'creative' every day although I use that term very loosely indeed. By, the way, you are an artist!

    1. Thank you for visiting, Carol, and for your comments! I even call cooking creative, not always but when I am making something new or special. It's important to feel inspired and to be creative in life.
